Early Saturday, reports emerged of major explosions rocking Tehran, following claims from Israel that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide further details.
Context: Escalating Strains and Recent Developments
The incident occurs against a background of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Key developments leading up to this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of American warships in the region, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They rejected assertions about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
These developments remains fast-moving, with further updates expected as events unfold.
